Mark Gray, leader of the BSCNC church planting team, estimates that about 5.5 million people, more than half the population of North Carolina, are not Christians. Gray and the church planting team are committed to bringing the Gospel to people across the state by equipping and supporting church planters, lay leaders, associations and churches in church planting efforts. Following an association's request and approval, the BSCNC helps fund a church planter for two years. Convention staff also provides a weeklong basic training session to help church planters plan the first year of their church plant.
Gray says church plants are more likely to be successful when the church planter goes after an audience most like himself. Church planters must be intentional in reaching a specific group. For example, church planters are reaching out in areas experiencing tremendous population growth, such as Cary and Morrisville. Other church planters are reaching young married couples, military families, cowboys and motorcycle riders. Starting new churches requires cooperation from local associations, local churches and North Carolina Baptists who are committed to serving Jesus Christ.
