Connecting Sunday morning to Monday morning

As parents, we want to do the right things with and for our children. Hopefully, going to church on Sunday is on your priority list. If it is, consider adding or elevating another item on your list: connecting Sunday to Monday.

Discipling your children is an everyday part of life. You are discipling your children to either follow Christ or follow the world. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 commands us to:

Listen, Israel! The LORD our God is the only true God!  So love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul, and strength.  Memorize his laws and tell them to your children over and over again. Talk about them all the time, whether you’re at home or walking along the road or going to bed at night, or getting up in the morning. Write down copies and tie them to your wrists and foreheads to help you obey them. Write these laws on the door frames of your homes and on your town gates. (CEV)

Challenge yourself to personalize these verses. Substitute your name in place of “Israel.” Do you know and honor God as the one true God?  Plan to talk with your children about the truth of God and what it means to be a follower of Christ.  As you have these conversations “over and over again” it will become a more natural part of your discussions. Ask your child who they talked about in class at church. What did this person do? Beyond praising your child’s art project, ask what was learned about God as they created it. If the art is a bit non-descript, tie in truth about being thankful for hands to paint or glue and for all the colors God has made for us to see and enjoy. You and your children will begin to see God’s work in guiding your lives.

As you are riding in your car going to and from practices, appointments and errands, learn scripture or talk about the messages in Christian music. Bless your child before leaving for school or going to bed at night. Have your child write verses on the bathroom mirror using dry erase markers. Post prayers, blessings, messages or scripture on a chalkboard by your front door. Write scripture notes and place them in your child’s lunchbox. While we most likely will not tie a copy of the law to our wrists, consider the impact of what your child sees you do with your hands at work or at home. Does it glorify God?

Discipling does not mean creating a sermon, leading an intense Bible study or being a perfect parent. It does involve intentionally telling and showing the story of the wonderful God we serve.  Be sure it’s on your list!
