Cooperative Program Sunday on April 11 is not a typical observance.
It's not tied to a Christian event, like Christmas or Easter, yet it's an important day.
Joining hands and hearts with other Baptists in the cause of Christ must happen first, of course. But when we join our pocketbooks, that's when things can really happen.
We vote on a budget each November during annual meeting. That determines what work we want to support together. Our churches send in their offerings during the year and the money is divided up according to the budget. That's basically what the Cooperative Program is - sharing money for the tasks of missions and ministry in ways we agree to.
It seems simple now. But it was a big idea when it was adopted back in 1925.
These days North Carolina Baptists support an impressive array of missions and ministries: We start a new church in the state every three or four days. We send just over 17 percent of our total budget overseas to support our approximately 5,300 international missionaries all around the world.
So as you're dropping your offering into the plate Sunday, April 11, pause and reflect on how that money will go far and wide in the cause of Christ.
In fact, a dollar given through the Cooperative Program will go more places and touch more lives for the Kingdom than any other method I know of. Some would say anything that unites millions of independent-minded Baptists for missions is at least truly remarkable!
